WRITE CSAC...
...and tell them to approve
the IBD Awareness Stamp NOW!
We thank you very much for choosing this assistance option, and urge you
to return to your designated action center after you are finished to see what
else you can do to help us!
The following was written by Gideon Sofer:
Writing the Citizens' Stamp Advisory Committee (CSAC):
The objective of this assistance option is to literally show the Stamps Committee
what we go through while living with IBD. Your goal is to write a letter to
CSAC explaining your battle with IBD. Only make it as person and detailed
as you'd like. There are no limitations, restrictions, or expectations with
this project. Sometimes it is very challenging to verbalize these types of
experiences. Many of my personal experiences are extremely hard to verbalize.
Sometimes, there are some things that you just can't explain in writing, and
that's OK! The general goal is to show the Committee who we are, and what
we're all about. What we go through on a daily, weekly, monthly, annual basis:
Scopes, pills, hospitalizations, surgeries, physical & emotional limitations,
etc. The most meaningful letters that the Committee can possibly receive for
this proposal are ones directly from the people who have it. Your emphatic
real-life experiences will bring each and every member of this Committee closer
than they've ever been to IBD.
FYI: CSAC is the Committee which officially serves the US Postal Service.
This specific Committee makes all of the stamp authorizations for the Postal
Service.
Some writing tips:
- Including IBD Facts
will definitely give your letter more force.
- The details of your experience in all aspects; how it may have changed
you, your family, etc. will really allow CSAC to understand the heart of
the issue.
- The lack of proper funding for research for IBD...Awareness would urge
pharmaceutical companies to allocate more funds towards research and development
for a cause and cure.
- You may wish to point out that Michael J. Fox is a the leader for Parkinson's
research, such a debilitating condition which affects the SAME number of
Americans, yet the amount of research going towards IBD is tremendously
less.
- The fact that America hosts 25% of the world's IBD population. America
is the leader in most medical research, yet there is minimal research being
performed for IBD.
- Awareness for a debilitating conditions such as Crohn's and Colitis should
rank at the top of the Committee's priorities due to the life-threatening
factors involved. You can express why you think a postage stamp for IBD
should rank at the top of the list.
- To make your letter even stronger, you might want to refer to the amount
of people that you've come across that have been unaware of IBD. Not only
are some unaware of what IBD is, but they've never even heard the term "IBD"
before. I know it tears my heart every time I hear somebody tell me they
have no idea of what IBD; that is why I strongly suggest you say something
to this effect: "The American population at large, is scarcely unaware
of these two conditions, Crohn's & Colitis." You can go on to say:
"Many people are aware of conditions such as HIV (AIDS) and Breast
Cancer, and more recently, Prostate Cancer & Parkinson's-due to the highly
optimistic publicity of Michael J. Fox." Important: Now, not
to take away from the importance of those ailments, you want to follow-up
by saying something like. "Not to say that these conditions are not
important, but the fact is, people are aware of them because of the publicity
that has been allocated towards them; but most importantly, the public is
aware of theses conditions because awareness has been raised by you, the
Postal Service. The reality is that you, the Postal Service has the opportunity
to use its ability to raise awareness, funding and research for two debilitating
conditions which society hardly knows of.."
- You can also explain all of the pluses an IBD Awareness Stamp would have.
